Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina University head volleyball coach Michelle Hansen announced that Alex Arendell, a left-handed setter from Cape Coral, Fla., has signed a National Letter of Intent.
Arendell is a three-time first team all-area selection and was named area Player of the Year this season. She has been chosen to play in the Florida All-Star game after averaging 8.1 assists and leading Bishop Verot to a district championship and reaching the finals of the region championship. Arendell set school records with 14 service aces in a game and 69 aces in a season.
"Alex is a very good athlete with excellent ball control," Hansen said. "She brings great experience and jump setting abilities. She also has excellent set location. We look for her to compete for playing time immediately."
In addition to her high school honors, Arendell has six years of club experience and is a two-time member of the USA South Volleyball club team, which was ranked first in the state of Florida in 2000 and second last season. She also excels in softball, earning first team All-State and second team USA Regional Louisville Slugger honors at first base in 2001.
Western Carolina is coming off a 21-11 season and a second place Southern Conference regular season finish. It marks the fourth consecutive season the Catamounts have won at least 20 matches and the 11th time in the school's 23 years of volleyball.
