Western Carolina Volleyball Hosts Catamount Clash

Sept. 18, 2008

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina volleyball (0-10) will host the seventh edition of the Catamount Clash Friday and Saturday, welcoming Arkansas State, Norfolk State, and last season's co-champion of the tournament Presbyterian College.

The Catamounts are looking for their first tournament title, in their home tournament, since 2003. Western Carolina is coming off a 3-1 loss to mountain rival UNC Asheville on September 16. Freshman Carrie Minogue wowed the crowd with a career-high 19 kills against the Bulldogs and currently ranks second on the team with 79 kills.

Fellow freshman Brittany Lysik leads Western Carolina with 80 kills averaging 2.35 kills per game. Junior setter Katie Hennessey tops the club in assists, dishing out 7.47 per game.

Presbyterian College (2-5) has had a two-week hiatus from competition. The Blue Hose head into the weekend with a two match winning streak and a record of 2-3. They won their last two matches of the Mercer "Bear Brawl" on Sept. 5-6 in three set sweeps, including their rematch against Georgia Southern. The Eagles defeated PC on Aug. 29 in their opening match, but the Blue Hose bounced back to claim the victory in Macon on Sept. 6.

Arkansas State is 7-3 on the season. In last week's action, the Red Wolves went 1-2 against the field in the Hampton Inn Saluki Invitational at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill. ASU dropped a 5-set match against Southeast Missouri State to open the tournament then came up short in a 3-1 loss to the host Salukis. ASU ended the tournament on a positive note when the Red Wolves defeated Western Illinois 3-1 on the final day of play.

Norfolk State is 2-10 and coming off a 3-0 loss to Maryland Eastern Shore. The club has victories over Virginia State and Hampton.
