CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina volleyball, fresh of its tournament victory at UNC Asheville, will travel to Atlanta, Ga. to participate in the Regency Suites/Georgia Tech Classic this weekend. The Catamounts face host Georgia Tech (10 a.m.) and Georgia (2:30 p.m.) on Friday and Kentucky (9 a.m.) and Arizona (5:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
Georgia Tech is offering fans a multitude of avenues to follow the matches at the tournament this weekend. Gametracker will be run for every event and the match between Georgia Tech and the Catamounts can be viewed at gatech.playonsports.tv for a single-game fee of $4.99. The match between Georgia Tech and Western Carolina can also be heard at www.wrek.org.
Western Carolina had a huge weekend at the tournament at UNC Asheville. Most notably was the debut of freshman outside hitter Jelena Jakovljevic who was named the tournament MVP. Jakovljevic recorded 35 kills in three matches and averaged 3.50 kills per game. Senior Meredith Harmon and sophomore Katie Hennessey were also named to the all-tournament team.
The Catamounts evened their record to 3-3 to start the season and look to continue their momentum and test their mettle this weekend.
Georgia Tech posted a 2-1 record and finished second at the Arkansas Clarion Inn Invitational, which was held on the campus of the University of Arkansas Aug. 24-25. The Jackets posted wins over Pittsburgh and Arkansas on the opening day of competition before falling to Pepperdine in its final match. Tech had last weekend off.
Kentucky hosted its annual home tournament last weekend, winning the title with victories over Georgetown, Austin Peay and Cleveland State. The Wildcats are 7-1 to start the season.
Arizona is off to a good start, opening the 2007 season with a 4-2 record through the first two weekends. Last week, they participated in the Pepperdine Classic, defeating Lipscomb and Nevada before falling to the host Waves in the tournament finale.
