Cullowhee, N.C, - Western Carolina women's Volleyball took part in their annual purple-and-gold scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Center. The team broke into two teams playing a best-of-seven series with the Gold squad winning 4-0.
The Gold squad was composed of seven players; freshman Emily Franklin, freshman Carrie Minoque, junior Brianna Lee, senior Liz McLauchlin, junior Liz Rondone, freshman Brittany Lysik and sophomore Carly Cash.
The Gold team won the series, 4-0, but each set was more competitive as the match wore on. The last three sets were scores of 15-12, 15-11 and the final, 15-12.
Head coach Stephanie Dragan was very impressed with her team and expects great things from them this season.
"This team has a very high ceiling and I want them to continue to improve while striving to be the best volleyball players they can be," said Dragan. "We have some solid veterans on the court and great leaders giving our team leadership to compete."
The newcomers are also getting into the act early as well with the special play of five freshmen.
Dragan added, "I am very pleased with their efforts; Carrie and Becca attacking the net; Sarah did a great job defensively; Brittany and Emily were competing hard, as well."
Western Carolina opens its regular season on Friday, August 29 against Stephen F. Austin in Lexington, Ky., before participating in the Kentucky Classic. The Catamounts will face Wisconsin, host Kentucky and Pittsburgh in tournament play.
