CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team began preparations for its 2017 campaign Tuesday morning as the 2017 preseason camp got underway inside the Ramsey Center. The team began the day with its annual photo session to take its 2017 team picture before hitting the court for the first practice of the season. The Catamounts had two practice sessions on opening day with a late morning run through focused on passing and serving and a late afternoon practice that worked on both offensive and defensive skills.
The Catamounts lost just three student-athletes off its 2016 squad including just one starter. The 2017 squad returns six of its seven starters and also welcomes in six newcomers who will all try and make an immediate impact on the team. Seniors Jo-Leigh VerVelde, Katie O'Connor, Gabby Edmondson, Kaycey Cermin and Reeve Reinsborough will look to lead the way as the Catamounts begin the quest for the 2017 Southern Conference Championship which will be hosted in Cullowhee inside the Ramsey Center in November.
WCU will have just 17 days to prepare for its season opener on Aug. 25. The Catamounts open the season at home by hosting the annual Catamount Volleyball Classic. Charleston Southern, Towson and Jacksonville State will all travel to Cullowhee for the two-day event.
