Cullowhee, N.C. - Head Western Carolina volleyball coach, Karen Glover, announced the Catamounts' 30-match 2014 season slate Monday highlighted by three early season tournaments and 10 matches at home in the Ramsey Center.
Glover's squad will open the season with three games in two days at the Radisson UCF Invitational. The season opener will be Friday, August 29 against Florida International at noon followed by tournament host UCF at 7:30 p.m. WCU's final match of the tournament will be against Eastern Kentucky at 5 p.m. Saturday, August 30.
The home opener at the Ramsey center is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9 against instate foe Charlotte at 7 p.m. The Catamounts hit the road again for their second preseason tournament, the Skyhawk Invitational hosted by UT-Martin. WCU opens with Valparaiso Friday, September 12 at 5:30 p.m. followed by UT-Martin on the afternoon of Saturday, September 13 at 2 p.m. WCU wraps up the three-match tournament with Drake Saturday, September 13 at 5:30 p.m.
After a midway match against mountain rival, UNC Asheville, the Catamounts travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. for their final three-match tournament. WCU opens with former Southern Conference foe Elon Friday, September 19 at 5 p.m. before taking on host Wake Forest Saturday, September 20 at 1 p.m. The tournament ends with Winthrop at 5 p.m. Saturday.
After a final nonconference tune-up against Gardner-Webb in the Ramsey Center on Wednesday, September 24 at 7 p.m., WCU opens SoCon play with UNCG on Friday, September 26 in Cullowhee at 7 p.m.
After a three-match road swing at conference schools, Furman on Saturday, September 27, Samford to open the month of October on the Friday, October 3 and Chattanooga on Saturday, October 4, the Catamounts will enjoy four straight matches in the friendly confines of the Ramsey Center. The homestand opens with ETSU, a school that rejoined the league in July, on Saturday, October 11 at noon and ends with another new SoCon member, Mercer, on Friday, October 17 at 6 p.m.
The season closes out after a three-match road swing, and two-home games against Samford on Friday, November 7 at 6 p.m. and Wofford the following day at 3 p.m. The match against the Terriers is slated for the Senior Day. The regular concludes at Mercer on Friday, November 14 at 7 p.m. with the three-day Southern Conference Championship beginning the following weekend on Saturday, November 22 in Greensboro, N.C.
The 2014 Catamounts return five starters from the 2013 squad anchored by senior outside hitters, Caitlin Piechota and Jordan Timmermann. Senior Addy George and junior Nicole Ford return in the middle with junior Cristina Nazarioreturning as the setter. Timmermann, 932 kills and 790 digs, and Piechota, 862 kills and 935 digs, are both in hot pursuit of the eclipsing the 1,000 career barrier in both categories. WCU has had 11 former players clear 1,000 kills and 17 for members of the team break 1,000 digs, while only eight former players accomplished the feat in both categories.
