WCU Volleyball Sweeps Chattanooga to Send off Seniors

Cullowhee, N.C. - Behind five blocks each by Addy George and Nicole Ford the Western Carolina volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-11) sweep of Chattanooga on Senior Day Sunday afternoon in the Ramsey Center in a Southern Conference match.

WCU sent its two seniors, Leah Butler and Morgan Cochran, off with a win in their last match in the Ramsey Center. Butler recorded five kills and four block assists, while Cochran picked up 19 digs. Cochran, who leads in the NCAA in digs per set, continues to inch towards the WCU all-time dig record. After Sunday's match she sits at 2,103 career digs, 49 shy of Liz Rondone's 2,152 digs.

Ford's five blocks all came from block assists, while George recorded one solo block and four block assists. Leading the way offensive for WCU was Jordan Timmermann with 10 kills on 18 attempts with only one error for a.500 hitting percentage. George followed with nine kills on 23 attempts with one error for a.348 hitting percentage. Cristina Nazario directed the offense with 28 assists.

WCU broke a tie at seven in the first set with a 3-0 on a George kill and two UTC errors to take a 10-7 lead. The Catamounts pushed the lead out to 17-10 and held on for the 25-21 set one win.

In set two with the score knotted at 15, WCU pushed two points on a UTC attack error a Nazario ace to take a 17-15 lead. The Mocs trimmed the margin down to one point, 20-19, but the Catamounts clinched the second set, 25-21, with five of the final seven points.

The third set was all WCU as the Catamounts extended a four point lead, 10-6, out to a 13 point lead, 21-8, en route to a 25-11 set win to complete the sweep.

The win puts WCU at 17-11 overall and 7-7 in the SoCon and in a tie with Elon for the sixth and seventh stop in the standings. Elon does hold the tiebreak over the Catamounts.

The Catamounts wrap up the regular season with back-to-back matches on the road at Georgia Southenr on November 15 and at The Citadel on November 16.
