The Western Carolina volleyball team dropped a road Southern Conference match to UNCG, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16), Friday night in Fleming Gymnasium.
With the loss, WCU slips to 16-9 overall and 6-5 in the SoCon, while UNCG improves to 14-10 on the season and 7-4 in conference play. The match broke a four-way tie fou third in the SoCon standings with WCU, Samford, Elon and UNCG. The Catamounts are now tied for fourth in the standings with Elon, WCU's opponent on Saturday at 7 p.m., and App State, who defeated Elon in three sets Friday night.
Jordan Timmermann led WCU in kills for the seventh consecutive match with 10 kills. Addy George followed with seven kills and five total blocks, four block assists and one solo block. The NCAA's leader in digs per set at 6.15 digs pet set entering the match, Morgan Cochran, collected 17 digs - slipping to 6.13 digs per set now for the season. Cochran entered the weekend as the only player in the NCAA to average over six digs per set.
In the first set, UNCG broke a tie at 11 with consecutive points to take a 13-11 lead. The Spartans held the slim lead until they extended the margin out to six points, 23-17. WCU fought back and cut into the lead, 24-23, but UNCG recorded a kill to squeak out the 25-23 win.
The second set was all UNCG as the Spartans led from start to finish in a 25-19 win.
The third set was contested early until UNCG used a 4-1 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Spartans never allowed WCU back into the set as they completed the sweep with a 25-16 win.
The Spartans held a .354 hitting percentage compared to a .221 for the Catamounts. UNCG also had 18 more kills than WCU, 54-36.
