Boone, N.C. - Appalachian State held a team hitting percentage over .300, as the Mountaineers edged out a sweep 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-23) of the Western Carolina volleyball team Sunday evening in the Holmes Center in a Southern Conference rivalry showdown.
The match was the last time the two SoCon rivals will meet in a conference match with App State departing the league for the Sun Belt Conference. On the volleyball court App State and WCU have met 78 times total and 57 times as members of the SoCon - both numbers are the most times WCU has played an opponent. The Mountaineers hold the lead in the all-time series, 30-48, and in conference matches, 20-37.
Jordan Timmermann paced the Catamount attack for the sixth consecutive match with 15 kills and was the only WCU hitter in double-figures. Timmermann also picked up ten digs for a double-double - her fifth of the season. Cristina Nazario directed the offense with 36 assists, while Morgan Cochran, the NCAA's dig leader at 6.18 digs per set, had a team-high 15 digs.
In the first set, App State extended a 14-12 lead out to a 16-12 lead following a Mountaineer kill and a Catamount setting error. App State kept the lead between three and four points until WCU pulled within two points, 23-21 and 24-22. However, the Mountaineers held on for the 25-22 set one win.
The second set saw App State jump out to a 10-3 start. The Catamounts were able to fight back and cut the lead down to three points, 15-12, but the Mountaineers regained their stride and cruised to a 25-17 set win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
With the third set tied at five, App State used a 3-0 run on two Catamount attack errors and a Mountaineer kill to take an 8-5 lead. The run was all the Mountaineers needed to complete the sweep as App State held on for the 25-23 set three win.
With the loss WCU slips to 16-8 overall and 6-4 in the SoCon, while App State improves to 14-10 on the season and 5-5 in conference play. The Catamounts are now tied for third with Samford (15-10, 6-4) and next weekend's opponents Elon (15-11, 6-4) and UNCG (13-10, 6-4).
WCU plays at UNCG on Friday, November 1 at 7 p.m. for its next match before traveling to Elon on Saturday, November 2 at 7 p.m. as the Catamounts wrap up their current four-match road swing.
