ELON, N.C. -
Despite a third set win for the second straight match, volleyball drops another close heartbreaker, 1-3, Saturday night against Elon on the road. Western Carolina fell to 8-19 on the season (4-8 SoCon) while Elon improved to 14-13 (7-5 SoCon).
The Catamounts fell in the first two sets by a combined four points, being defeated 24-26 and 23-25. WCU jumped on the other side of the scoreboard in the third, winning 25-23. The Purple and Gold got behind early in the fourth, but brought the score within three late in the match with the score 18-21. A three-point Phoenix swing gave Elon the separation it needed as the Phoenix won the set 25-21.
Caitlin Piechota and Jordan Timmermann again led the Catamounts offensively as the sophomore duo combined for 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Piechota picked up her fifth straight double-double as she added 18 digs. Classmate Addy George also had a solid match in the middle with 11 kills, hitting .450, while also picking up four blocks.
Freshman Nicole Ford played well for the second straight match, picking up nine kills, three digs and three blocks.
Elon hit at a .255 clip with Kris Harris (10), Megan Gravley (11) and Chanelle Smith (12) each totaling double-digit kills.
Western Carolina returns to the road next weekend as the Catamounts travel to rival Appalachian State on Thursday before heading to Statesboro, Ga., to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles on Saturday. Recaps and results of those two matches can be found at CatamountSports.com.
