CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team put a halt to its five-match losing streak Saturday afternoon inside the Ramsey Center as the Catamounts defeated The Citadel, 3-1. The victory is the 12th-straight over the Bulldogs for WCU and also marks the second conference victory of the season for the Catamounts.
Freshman Gabby Gray was WCU’s lone double-digit kill recipient as she put down 14 kills on 31 swings while compiling a .323 attack percentage. Three others added seven kills for the Catamounts including seniors Jo-Leigh VerVelde and Katie O’Connor along with freshman MaKenzie White. VerVelde had a team-high 23 asssists, 13 digs and a pair of blocks to go along with her seven kills. O’Connor had a team-high five blocks while White chipped in three blocks.
Sophomore Abigail Veit added six kills and seven digs to the effort while sophomore Meagan Sanchez led the team with 25 digs. Freshman Hannah Price split time at setter with VerVelde and dished out 12 assists to go along with 18 digs.
The Bulldogs were led by Jen Barbot who had 10 kills.
The Catamounts took a quick 2-0 lead with 25-18 and 25-15 victories but the Bulldogs came out swinging after the 10 minute break and won 25-17 in the third set. The fourth and final set was tight early but the Catamounts pulled away late and took another 25-15 victory.
The victory moves WCU’s record to 7-14 overall and 2-6 in league action while the Bulldogs dropped to 7-18 overall and 1-7 in SoCon play.
The Catamounts will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 20 as they host the Chattanooga Mocs at 6 pm.
