Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team fell 3-0 to the College of Charleston Saturday evening in match number one of parents' weekend in the Ramsey Center. The Cougars defeated the Cats, 31-29, 30-25, 30-25. With the loss, the Catamounts drop to 14-7 overall, 6-3 in the league, while C of C improves to 14-5 overall, 7-2 SoCon.

The Lady Cats hit well in the first game, but couldn't pull out the win as Stephanie Ballard posted two kills to win the game for the Cougars, 31-29. Western struggled early in the second, falling behind by as many as seven points, but the Catamounts pulled it to within one to make it 18-17. They kept the game close until the end when the Cougars pulled away on a kill and an ace by Shawn Beckham to give them game two.

In the third, WCU took the lead on a kill by Stefanie Peters to make it 9-8. The Cats would keep the lead until College of Charleston tied it at 22-22 after an attack error by Michelle Gorton. Gorton came up with the kill in the next series to take the lead back before the Cougars tied the game once again on a kill by Beckham to make it 23-23. C of C then took the lead and would not relinquish it, as the Cougars moved on to take the game, 30-25, and the match.

The Catamounts were led by Sara Komosinski with 10 kills, four blocks and a .360 hitting percentage and Gorton's 11 kills and 12 digs. Alex Arendell led Western in digs with 14, while Shari Harder posted 34 assists in the match.
