ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team dropped its final non-conference match of the season, 3-0, to mountain-rival UNC Asheville Tuesday night. The Bulldogs used their home court advantage to down the Catamounts in straight sets 25-19, 25-21 and 25-19. Sophomore Alyssa Zupan and freshman Aleah Keaton led the way offensively for the Catamounts as they each turned in eight kills in the loss.
The loss drops the Catamounts record to 5-8 overall as they head into conference play this weekend. The Bulldogs improved to 6-5 on the year and snapped a two match losing streak to Western Carolina with the victory.
Freshman Abigail Veit joined in on the offensive attack as she tallied seven kills for the Catamounts. Junior Jo-Leigh VerVelde returned to the lineup and dished out a team-high 18 assists while picking up a service ace. Sophomore Dakoda Hawkins spent some time at setter as well as she had 10 assists with a service ace.
Freshman Meagan Sanchez led the team with eight digs from her libero position while Veit picked up six. Junior Katie O'Connor and Zupan tied for the team lead in blocks with four. O'Connor had four block assists while Zupan had a solo stop and three assists.
The Bulldogs had just nine hitting errors the entire match including just three coming off non-block situations. UNCA hit .392 as a team while Cara Guthrie put down a match-high 19 kills while hitting .485 as an individual. The Catamounts had 21 hitting errors and hit just .158 as a team.
WCU will now have four days to prepare for its Southern Conference opener against The Citadel on Sunday inside the Ramsey Center. The match will be aired on ESPN3 and begins at 3 pm.
