Buies Creek, S.C. - Western Carolina picked up its first victory of the year as the Catamounts defeated Wofford 3-1 (30-22, 30-25, 20-30, 30-25) in the opening match of the Campbell Classic Volleyball Tournament on Friday evening. The match did not count in Southern Conference standings.

Western Carolina (1-5) was led by sophomore Kellyn Thaut (18 kills), senior Stefanie Peters (12 kills, 19 assists) and freshman Melissa Parana (11 kills). Setters Meghan Boyle (21 assists) and Kate Willard (18 assists) directed a Catamount offensive attack which out-hit Wofford .208-to -.095.

"I was pleased with the way we played today," said WCU head coach Angell Benson. "It was good to get our first win under our belt. We are coming together as a team and are showing progress each match. We still need to correct some mistakes and continue to play well tomorrow, facing a tough Campbell team and UNC Asheville. Stefanie (Peters) was solid and Melissa (Parana) controlled the net well.

Wofford (0-4) struggled offensively committing 32 attack errors in the match. Andrea Duke led the Terriers with 15 kills, while Rhea DeJesus tallied 36 assists. Meredith Brantley (12 digs), Duke (10 digs) and Shana Glenn (10 digs) led the Wofford defensive effort.

The Catamounts will face host team Campbell on Saturday (Sept. 11) at Noon, then turn around to face mountain rival UNC Asheville in the final match of the Classic at 3 pm.
