MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Western Carolina volleyball team snapped its seven-match losing streak Saturday night as the Catamounts swept Southeastern Louisiana in their final match of the ISATAP Collegiate Cup Invitational hosted by Alabama State University. WCU dropped an earlier match Saturday 3-1 to host Alabama State.
Sophomore Abigail Veit led WCU in its win over SLU as she was the only Catamount to reach double-figures in kills with 15. She also chipped in eight digs and a pair of blocks. Freshman Gabby Gray added nine kills and seven digs to the effort while three others chipped in four kills apiece.
Senior middle Katie O'Connor rejected six SLU attacks including picking up one solo block. Sophomore Aleah Keaton had three blocks including a team-high two solo while freshman MaKenzie White added four block assists.
Overall, the Catamounts hit .330 as a team led by VerVelde who had four kills on just five attacks (.800). The WCU defense held SLU to just a .105 team attack percentage as well in the match.
The Catamounts won 25-13, 25-23 and 25-19 to earn their second victory of the season. With the win and loss on Saturday the Catamounts improved to 2-7 on the year.
In the loss versus ASU, three Catamounts reached double-figures in kills including Gray (12), O'Connor (10) and Veit (10). Veit added a team-high 17 digs to post a double-double in the loss. She also had two service aces. O'Connor led the team in blocks with three stops over the four sets while Gray had eight digs to add to her stat line.
VerVelde dished out 37 assists while digging up eight balls in the match while Sanchez had 10 digs and a team-high three service aces.
ASU won the opening set 25-20 before WCU responded with a 25-20 victory of its own in the second set. The third and fourth sets went in the Hornets favor at 25-21 and 25-17, respectively.
The Catamounts will now return to Cullowhee where they will face mountain-rival UNC Asheville Tuesday night at 6 pm.
