Clemson, S.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team were defeated in its final two matches at the Clemson Invitational Saturday in Jervey Gym. Early Saturday, the Catamounts fell 3-0 to 21st-ranked Northern Iowa. Later, Western had lost 3-0 to Winthrop.

Northern Iowa (2-1) used strong serving and hit at a .322 percentage to come away with scores of 30-11, 30-18 and 30-20. The Panthers finished the match with 17 service aces, including five from Shari Vermeer. Vermeer and Rachel Tink, who had three aces and nine digs, led the Panthers with eight kills each. Western was led by sophomore Kellyn Thaut who registered a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, while freshman Melissa Parana had 10 kills as well.

In its second match of the day, Thaut came through with 19 kills for the Catamounts (0-5). However, Winthrop's Mary Hock had 14 kills, 12 digs and four service aces to lead the Eagles (4-1) to scores of 30-21, 30-21 and 30-26.

Stefanie Peters, who had 18 kills and 16 digs versus The Citadel Friday, was named All-Tournament.

Western Carolina's month-long road trip will continue on Tuesday (Sept. 7) at Gardner-Webb. Match time is set for 7 pm.
