Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Catamount volleyball team defeated the Evansville Purple Aces in game one of the Catamount Clash II, 3-2.
WCU rallied against Evansville as they cam back from a 23-29 deficit to win game one 33-31. Evansville took games two and three 30-23 and 30-24, respectively. The Cats fought back to win games four and five by a decisive 30-27 and 15-12 to mark the teams first victory of the season. Evansville drops to 0-1 on the season.
Senior Christy Attebery led WCU in hitting with 19 kills, recording a double-double with 11 digs. Freshman Stefanie Peters and senior Bri Milan-Williams led the team in digs with 21 apiece.
Leading the way for the Lady Purple Aces were seniors Jessica Kiefer with 23 kills and Samantha Butler recording 37 digs.
The Virginia Tech Hokies defeated the Gardner-Webb Lady Bulldogs 3-0 in game two of the tournament. Gardner-Webb battled Virginia Tech in game one, however, could not come up with the win finishing with a final score of 30-23. The Hokies shut down the Lady Bulldogs in games two and three, 30-16 and 30-20, respectively.
Junior Sarah Rogers led the Hokies with 10 kills, while junior Cheryl Stinson led the team with a .636 hitting percentage. The Lady Bulldogs were led by senior Linette Ramseur with seven kills and 10 digs on the night. Virginia Tech starts the season 1-0, while Gardner-Webb falls to 0-1.
Evansville and Virginia Tech will open day two at noon tomorrow, September 1, followed by WCU and Gardner-Webb at 2:00 p.m. Evansville will take on Gardner-Webb at 4:00 p.m. and WCU and Virginia Tech will wrap-up the tournament at 6:00 p.m.
