Cullowhee, N.C. - Freshman Ashley Harris notched a win in her singles flight and the team of Kristin Ikard and Susanna Sjokvist advanced in double competition for Western Carolina Friday afternoon as the women's tennis team competes in the USC Fall Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
Harris defeated Kiera Strickland of Georgia State to advance to face Vesna Popac of South Carolina State on Saturday morning. After taking the first set, 6-3, Harris dropped the second, 4-1. However, the Belmont, N.C. native rallied to take the match, 6-4 in the third.
In other singles action, Ikard was defeated by Grace Blakely of South Carolina in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) and Hannah Priest of East Carolina, 6-0 and 6-1. Despite forcing a third set, Sjokvist fell to Muriel Sherwood of East Tennessee State (1-6, 6-3, 1-6). Freshman Trish Hanson fell to Fallon Koon of South Carolina, 6-3 and 6-1. She will face College of Charleston junior Rachel Magory on Saturday, with Ikard squaring off versus Corel from Francis Marion.
Also, Katherine Ptak dropped her two singles matches, 6-2 and 6-0, to Megan McGavock of South Carolina and 6-1, 6-1 to Delaine Hare of Wofford.
In doubles action, Ikard and Sjokvist combined to defeat the team of Bair/Heard from Charleston Southern, 8-2, to advance in the C1 Doubles draw. They will face the winner of the Walsh/Blakely (South Carolina) - Bailey/Smith (ECU) match on Saturday.
Fresh off their historic win at the Wilson ITA Regionals last week, the tandem of Hanson and Ptak will look to continue on that -- and their teammates' -- momentum as they take the court against the team of Haggstrom/Nazaruk from Army in the B2 Doubles draw on Saturday.
The women's tennis team continues at the USC Fall Invitational on Saturday, with five singles matches and a pair in doubles competition.
