Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University women's tennis history was made Thursday afternoon as the Lady Catamounts secured their first win ever at the Wilson ITA Southeast Regionals hosted by Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The doubles team of freshman Trish Hanson and junior Katherine Ptak defeated the tandem of Alana Carere and Isabel Rzezniczek, 8-6 to advance in the women's open doubles. The Western duo will now face off against the fifth-seeded team of Karin Coetzee and Ashlee Davis from Wake Forest who drew a bye on Thursday. Coetzee was ranked 14th on preseason national rankings in singles competition.

Hanson will also be in singles competition on Friday as she takes on senior Danielle Schwartz, also from Wake Forest at 2:30 pm in the top half of the women's open singles. Hanson is Western's second-consecutive automatic qualifier, joining Kristin Munn who was the first to accomplish the feat in 2003.

The singles finalists and doubles champion from the prestigious event will be rewarded with invitations to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan, to be held Nov. 4-7

The women's tennis team continues today ITA Southeast Regionals. The five-day event is being held in Winston-Salem, N.C.
