CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina's Karen Jiménez and Stacia Kissell have been invited to compete in the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships hosted by Wake Forest University beginning Thursday morning at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
The tournament - which features the best collegiate players from North and South Carolina - starts on Thursday, Oct. 18 with the singles finals scheduled for Monday, Oct. 22. The qualifying singles draw is now available with the singles main draw set to be released following the conclusion of the qualifying round.
Jiménez plays first as the junior from Colombia plays Thursday morning in the qualifying round against Olga Blank of UNC Wilmington at 9 a.m. If she wins, she will play the winner of UNCG's Annette Rios and Xue Zhang of Wake Forest with the winner advancing to the main draw on Friday.
In the first fall tournament of the season at the Elon Fall Invitational, Jiménez and freshman Erin Maguire won their doubles flight.
"Karen has always been a very mentally tough player. In the past, she's had to deal with some injuries, but she's a fighter and finds a way to get the job done," said head coach Chris Wollett. "Now that she's healthy and playing well, I feel she's prepared for this type of tournament."
Kissell was selected to the main draw, with her first match on Friday morning.
Kissell - a freshman from Latrobe, Pa. - picked up her first two collegiate victories with her wins over N.C. Central's Olesya Palko and Virginia Tech's Emily Lauten at the Elon Fall Invitational.
"I think it's great that Stacia is in the main draw of the ITA Regional as a freshman," continued Wollett. "She had some solid results at Elon and has really been pushing herself since then. This tournament is going to be a good test for her."
