Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina University women's tennis team qualified for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team for the first time ever this year, posting a 3.304 grade point average (GPA) at the close of the 2002-03 school year.
To be eligible for this honor, teams must have a team cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2 based on a 4.0 scale. All eligible student athletes whose names are on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more matches are required to be averaged into this GPA.
Along with the team award, junior Kristin Cotton also received the 2003 ITA Scholar-Athlete award with her cumulative GPA of 3.733 for the 2002-03 school year. To receive this award athletes must be varsity tennis letterwinners at their current school, have a GPA of at least a 3.5 for the current academic year or ranked in the top 10 percent of their class, and they have to have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
The Lady Catamounts are now gearing up for their fall tournament schedule. September 19-21, WCU heads to ETSU for the Bucs' Fall Tournament. October 3-5 the Cats travel to Raleigh, N.C., for the NC State Wolfpack Tournament. To wrap up the fall season, Western heads to Columbia, S.C., for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships October 31-November 2.
