Cullowhee, N.C. - Former Catamount Rocio Perez and current senior Kristin Cotton Icard, two members of the Western Carolina University women's tennis team, received the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete award for 2004. Perez and Icard posted cumulative grade point averages of 3.693 and 3.574, respectively, at the end of the 2003-04 academic year.

To receive this award athletes must be varsity tennis letterwinners at their current school, have a GPA of at least a 3.5 for the current academic year or ranked in the top 10 percent of their class, and they have to have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

Perez, a telecommunications engineering technology major, graduated in the spring of 2004. Icard, a recreational therapy major, begins her senior year with the Cats this season.

The Catamounts are now gearing up for their fall tournament schedule. Sept. 17-19 WCU heads to Johnson City, Tenn., for the ETSU Fall Invitational. The Cats travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., Sept. 24-26 for the Chattanooga Fall Invitational. Oct. 15-17 Western goes to Raleigh, N.C. for the N.C. State Fall Invitational followed by a trip to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the Southeast Regionals Oct. 21-24. The Cats wrap up their fall schedule in Columbia, S.C. Oct. 29-31 at the South Carolina Fall Invitational.
