Four Western Carolina women's tennis players, as well as the team as a whole, were honored today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), earning 2005 All-Academic and Scholar-Athlete accolades. Susanna Sjokvist, Trish Hanson, Ashley Harris, and 2005 graduate, Kristin Cotton, were all honored by the ITA.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
Sjokvist, a rising sophomore from Gustafs, Sweden, earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for the both the fall and spring semesters during the last academic year. She is currently majoring in Biology, with a minor in Economics. Freshman Harris earned a GPA of 3.989 while also majoring in Biology, with classmate Trish Hanson earning a 3.775 grade point average during her freshman season to make the list. Hanson is pursuing a major in Sport Management.
Cotton, who graduated from Western following the spring semester with a Bachelors of Science in recreational therapy, concluded her senior year with a 3.708 GPA and a cumulative average of 3.602.
All four of Western's honorees were additionally named to the University Dean's List for the spring 2005 semester.
As a team, Western was named an ITA All-Academic team, which is an award open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team GPA of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). As a team in the 2004-05 academic year, the Catamounts had a collective grade point average of 3.635.
