June 19, 2002

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University women's tennis coach Jan Stubbs announced that Katie Van Ewyk and Megan Bechtold, both of Marietta, Ga., have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Lady Catamount tennis team in the fall.

Van Ewyk (Marietta, Ga./Pope High School) played number two singles with a record of 10-3 as a senior. She won the Fair Oaks Tournament and was a finalist at the Hudlow Junior Hardcourt Championships. Van Ewyk played for Team Georgia, was ranked 26th in the state and 99th regionally. She also excels in the classroom as an honor roll student.

Bechtold (Marietta, Ga./Pope High School) played in the top spot for the Greyhounds and won the Georgia Top 16 Tournament during her senior year, making it to the finals of the Stone Mountain National Tournament in order to go to San Jose, Ca. for the Super Nationals. She ranked ninth in the state, 56th regionally and 127th in the country. Bechtold also played for Team Georgia as well as the Southern tennis team at Nationals. Outside of tennis, she has lettered in swimming and was on the honor roll as well.

"I am very excited to have both of these ladies on the team," said Stubbs. "They both have excellent tennis backgrounds and I know if they play to their potential, we'll have a great season this year. I'm looking forward to how they'll contribute to the team."
