CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina's women's tennis team (5-10), which is the No. 10 seed, will face No. 8 seed Wofford (5-12) Thursday in the first round of the Southern Conference Tennis Championships in Charleston, S.C.

The Catamounts did not win a conference match in the regular season but did have a few close matches. One close match was with Wofford, falling to the Terriers 4-3. Western Carolina swept the doubles point, winning all three matches, but lost four of the five singles matches played to drop the contest.

"We had a close match during the season losing 4-3 to Wofford, and the players realized how close they were to winning the match and then having it slip away," said Head Coach Jan Stubbs. "It left a bitter taste."

Stubbs is looking for the team to put the pieces together at the tournament. She is stressing the importance of securing the doubles point and building on that momentum.

"We need to start off well in doubles and try and secure the doubles point, hopefully this will give us some momentum going into the singles matches," Stubbs said. "We also as a team need to get off to a faster start in our singles matches. I think that we learned as a team from the previous match/matches is how close we are to winning our dual matches."

Should the Catamounts advance to the second round the team will face No. 2 seed College of Charleston on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
