Cullowhee, N.C. - Head Women's Tennis Coach Jan Stubbs announced today that Rocio Perez of Seville, Spain has joined the Western Carolina tennis team after transferring from Virginia Commonwealth University. The 5-10 junior is immediately eligible to play for WCU this spring.

Perez comes to Western after playing in the fourth through sixth positions for the 17th ranked VCU Rams. She also played number three in doubles for the Rams. Perez finished the 2001-02 season at 4-3 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. Her VCU team won the Colonial Athletic Association championship and made it as far as the championship match in the NCAA Finals during her sophomore season.

As a junior tennis player in Spain, Perez finished as high as first in her state and eighth in the country. She is not only a strong athlete, but a strong student as well, graduating in the top four of her high school class. While at VCU, Perez earned a 3.4 GPA. Upon entering Western Carolina, she plans to major in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology.
