Columbia, S.C. - Western Carolina University tennis duo Katie VanEwyk and Kristin Cotton finished second over the weekend in the C2 Doubles Draw at the Southern Intercollegiate Women's Tennis Tournament. The pair beat out Gilmore and Ingle of Presbyterian College (8-3) and Clark and Morris of UNC Charlotte (8-4) before falling to Boriser and Popac of South Carolina State (9-7) in a close championship match.

In C1 Doubles, Shannon Zalinski and Erin Johnson fell early to Koon and Blakely of South Carolina (8-2), but rebounded to defeat Turner and Whisenhunt of Wofford (8-5). Zalinski and Johnson finished in sixth place in the draw after losing a tough battle to Wilson and Niculescu of College of Charleston, 9-7.

In singles action, WCU's Kristin Munn finished 11th in the B2 bracket. Munn lost to Walsh of SC (6-0, 6-2), beat Lynch of Presbyterian (6-1, 6-0), fell to Morris of Charlotte (6-2, 7-6[3]), then defeated Wofford's Whisenhunt (2-6, 7-5, 6-1). In the C1 Draw, Johnson and Zalinski split their first two matches, then lost in the third to face each other. However, they did not the play the final match to determine the 11th place finish.

Cotton placed 11th in her bracket as well. In the C2 singles draw, she fell to Hatch of UNCC (3-6, 6-2, 6-2), beat Kennedy of Charleston Southern (6-1, 6-1), lost to Borsey of SC State (6-0, 6-2) and won her final match over Wofford's Turner, who withdrew from play. To wrap up the tournament, VanEwyk additionally finished 11th for the weekend in the C3 Draw.

Katie VanEwyk, along with Cotton, battled to a second place finish in doubles action.


The Lady Catamounts have wrapped up their fall tournament season and will resume play on Feb. 15 when they play host to Queens College at 1 pm.
