Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team concluded fall competition over the weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate in Columbia, S.C., and hosted by the University of South Carolina. Sophomores Trish Hanson and Susanna Sjokvist each placed 10th in their singles draw, while the Catamounts finished seventh and eighth in two flights of doubles competition.
After dropping her opening match, (6-0, 6-4) to Caroline Grage from Armstrong Atlantic, Hanson rallied to advance to the consolation bracket championship of the B-2 singles draw. She fell behind a set to Mallory Cook of Appalachian State, 6-1, before tallying identical score wins in the next two sets to advance. Hanson finished 10th after falling to Petra Jantti of Coastal Carolina, 6-4, 6-0.
In other singles action, freshman Holly Stocks and sophomore Susanna Sjokvist were forced to face each other on Saturday's second round after they both dropped first round matches on Friday. Stocks fell to Alex Smith of East Carolina, (6-1, 6-0), while the Swedish-born Sjokvist dropped her opener to Jessica Bair from Charleston Southern, (6-3, 7-5). Sjokvist got the better of her teammate, (6-1, 6-1) to advance in the consolation bracket, where she defeated Calhoun from Francis Marion (6-1, 6-2), before falling to Nicole Lemmerer from Coastal Carolina in the championship, (6-0, 6-0) to finish 10th. Stocks defeated Anna Lee Clarke from Benedict College before falling to Katie Chester of Erskine, (6-3, 6-5), to finish 14th in the C-3 singles draw.
In doubles action for Western, Sjokvist teamed with Hanson to finish eighth in the B-2 doubles draw. The Catamount tandem fell to the team of Rachel Malina and Kiera Strickland from Georgia State, 8-3, in the opening round and fell, 8-5, to Virginie Dinh and Amy Pazahamick from Coastal Carolina. In the seventh-place match, they fell to Salem Kirven and Frances Blanton from Appalachian State, 8-6.
The freshmen tandem of Stocks and
April Greene joined for a seventh-place showing in the C-3 doubles draw. The two fell in their opening round match-up to Prickett-Rakes from Wofford and then lost to a duo from Francis Marion to place seventh.
Western will open its spring schedule on January 21, 2006, against the East Carolina Pirates in Asheville, N.C.
