Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina tandem of Trish Hanson and Katherine Ptak played their way to a fifth place finish in the B2 doubles draw, and freshman Ashley Harris placed sixth in her C2 singles draw to highlight the USC Fall Invitational, the final event on the Lady Catamounts' fall schedule.
Hanson and Ptak advanced to the finals of the second tier where they defeated the Georgia State team of Simona Flotyn and Kiera Strickland, 8-6, to take fifth. Harris won the first-round match-up in her singles flight to advance. After taking the first set, 6-3, she dropped the next two 5-7, 2-6 as she fell to Vesna Popac of South Carolina State on Saturday. Sunday, Harris rallied to defeat Tami McQueen of Murray State, 6-1, 6-4, to face Muriel Sherwood of East Tennessee State in the fifth-place match. Sherwood continued her sweep of Western players defeating Harrins 6-2, 6-2.
Hanson in singles action was defeated by Sarah Shelly of Wofford, 6-3, 6-2. After falling to Delaine Hare of Wofford and Casady Pruitt of Murray State on Saturday, Ptak rallied to upend Heard from Charleston Southern, 6-1, 6-1 on Sunday.
On Saturday, Kristin Ikard defeated Corel of Francis Marion Saturday to advance to face Lisa Bornt-Davis of Furman on Sunday for 13th place in the C1 singles flight. However, the two did not play on Sunday. The WCU duo of Ikard and Susanna Sjokvist fell to ETSU's Jewel Aldea and Gemma Halim, 8-4, in the C1 doubles draw.
Western Carolina returns to action in the spring semester, traveling to NC State on January 29.
