Oct. 30, 2017

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Western Carolina tennis team closed out the fall portion of its 2017-18 season this weekend as the Catamounts competed at the Wofford Invite. Freshman Carli Deehr led the singles action for WCU as she won her flight including taking a pair of third set tiebreakers on the way to the title. Sophomore Jordan Strickland and junior Alexa Webb teamed up in doubles to bring home a title for the Catamounts as well.

"I'm proud of the way we ended our fall campaign,” said head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins. “We showed a lot of fight and grit and came away with some very good wins. Each girl on our team should be walking away from the fall season with confidence in the way their games are progressing. We have a great group this year and I know they are determined to keep working hard until our first match in January so that we can accomplish our goals for the spring."

Deehr took home the Terrier Singles flight with three-straight victories. She began with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Steffi Kong who was competing unattached. She then fought off a tough Laine Parker of Gardner-Webb 5-7, 7-6 (3), 11-9 in one of the closest matches of the entire tournament. In the championship match, Deehr faced off against Anastasia Horvat of UNC Asheville and won 6-1, 4-6, 13-11.

Strickland and Webb did their damage in the Gray Doubles flight. They started off with a 6-0 sweep of a team from Gardner-Webb. They then downed a duo from USC Upstate 6-2 before taking the championship match 6-3 over the doubles team from host Wofford.

WCU’s two other doubles squads picked up a win highlighted by junior Savannah Taranto and freshman Jordyn King’s victory over a team from Virginia Tech.

Strickland earned a pair of victories in the SoCon Singles flight. She began with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Valentine Limauge of Gardner-Webb. She then dropped a tough match against Defne Olcay of Emory 6-4, 6-3. The loss sent Strickland to the third place match which she won over UNC Asheville’s Emily Sidor, 6-4, 6-4.

Sophomore Lauren McCall and Webb each picked up opening match victories in their flights before falling in the third place match to earn fourth overall. McCall won a hard fought 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 victory over Paige Christian of Georgia Southern in the opening round of the Gray Singles flight before dropping matches to opponents from Wofford and Arkansas State. Webb competed in the White Singles flight and won 1-6, 6-3, 10-3 against Berta Masdevall Masip from Arkansas State. Webb then dropped matches against USC Upstate and Radford.

King picked up a backdraw victory over Arkansas State’s top individual in the Gold Singles flight. King dropped her opening match in three sets before defeating Shelby King of Arkansas State. She won 6-4, 6-1 before falling in the backdraw finals against Arianne de Winter of Georgia Southern.

Taranto also picked up a singles win in Spartanburg. After dropping her first two matches of the Black Singles flight she downed Anita Detlava of Arkansas State 7-6, 3-6, 10-1 in the backdraw.

The Catamounts will now begin preparations for the spring portion of their schedule which opens up Jan. 26 at Lipscomb.
