Columbia, S.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team completed play in the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate over the weekend, with freshman Amanda Massey winning the consolation championship in her bracket of play. The weekend tournament marked the end of fall competition for head coach Jan Stubbs and the Catamount women's tennis team.

After dropping her opening round match to South Carolina's Brace Blakely, 7-5, 6-3, Massey recorded three-straight wins to take the left side of the pairings. On Saturday, Massey downed Mary Beth Gun from Tennessee-Martin, 6-5, 7-5 to advance on to Sunday. In the first of two matches on the final day, the Weaverville, N.C., native rallied to defeat N.C. State's Allison Barry, 4-6, 7-6 (10-7) to move into the consolation finals against Jenna Tudor from Erskine. Leading one set to none, Massey needed a tie-breaker to win, 6-0, 2-6 (10-6).

In other individual action, junior Trish Hanson dropped her three singles matches both on Saturday and Sunday, while her classmate, Susanna Sjokvist, captured victory in her opening round match, winning 6-1, 6-2, over Paula Ghilardotti of Brenau, before falling to Amanda Becker from the College of Charleston, 6-2, 6-1. In the consolation side of the winner's bracket, Sjokvist defeated South Carolina State's Vesna Popac before bowing out in the fifth-place match to Georgia Southern's Kristi Kegerreis, 6-1, 6-0.

Like Sjokvist, junior Mariona Trilla Jane also claimed victory in her opening round match, rallying to down Amanda Swindall from Charleston Southern, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. However, the Barcelona, Spain native fell in her final three appearances over the weekend. Rounding out Western's individuals in competition was freshman Teresa Stevens who claimed one victory by default in four total matches.

In doubles competition, Hanson and Massey teamed up, dropping their C-1 doubles bracket opening bout with the Coastal Carolina team of Maria Camberos and Sarize Coetzee, 8-1. However, the duo managed to secure the 8-6 win over Wofford's Wetzig and Sabrina Smyers. WCU's Trilla-Jane and freshman Emily Turke defeated Caitlin Dillon and Amanda Bitler from Meredith College in their first round match in the C-2 doubles bracket, but dropped back-to-back matches to finish fourth overall. And finally, the team of Stevens and Stocks went winless, dropping both of their C-3 doubles bracket matches.

With the fall portion of the 2006-07 schedule completed, Western returns to action in February when it visits Brevard College on Feb. 10, 2007 at Noon.
