Western Carolina Women's Tennis Concludes Play at Southern Intercollegiate

SOUTHERN INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPLETE RESULTS (PDF)

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Western Carolina women's tennis concluded the fall portion of the 2007-08 schedule on Sunday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. The tournament, hosted by the University of South Carolina, was played at the Maxcy Gregg, Sam Daniel, and Columbia Tennis Centers, and the USC Indoor Fieldhouse.

Senior Mariona Jane recovered from a 6-2, 6-4 first round loss to Erskine College's Joana Tudor to win the consolation bracket of C-3 singles. She defeated Georgia Southern's Kelli Helms 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket and defeated Wofford College's Betsy Hauer by the same score to win the consolation finals match.

Fellow senior Trish Hanson opened flight B-1 singles with a first round victory, defeating USC-Upstate's Emilia Milovanovic 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-3. Hanson lost in the second round 6-2, 7-5 to College of Charleston's Kenzie Casey. She also fell 6-1, 6-0 to Armstrong Atlantic University's Alisa Kagokin.

In flight B-2 singles, Amanda Massey notched a first round victory with a 6-3, 7-6(7) win over Coastal Carolina's Ashley Heard. She dropped her second round match 6-0, 3-6, 4-6 to West Virginia's Ashley Pillsbury. The lost her second match of the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat by South Carolina State's Andrea Davidora.

Hanson and Massey closed out doubles play in flight B-3 doubles with an 8-2 victory over Francis Marion's Hickman/Belk before dropping the final match of the day 8-2 to Georgia Southern's Maddox/Kegerrels.

The Catamount women's tennis team returns to the court on February 16 when WCU opens their spring season with Presbyterian.
