Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Kristin Ikard put together a pair of runs, one in singles and the other in doubles competition as the Lady Catamounts competed well at the 2004 Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational held over the weekend in Raleigh, N.C.

Ikard earned a second-place finish in the singles draw C2 flight. Her run began with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over fourth seeded Allison Barry from N.C. State. She then swept past Christine Blair from Charleston Southern, 6-2, 6-3, to draw another seeded opponent in her third match. Against the top-seeded Kate LaCoste from UNC Greensboro, Ikard earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory, advancing to the finals where the streak ended, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Trish Hanson won a hard fought victory her opening match in the singles A3 flight. The Alpharetta, Ga. native won the first set, 7-6 (4), but dropped the second, 3-6. In the deciding third, she won 10-6 to advance in the bracket to face the four-seed, Cameron Torres of N.C. State, where she fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Classmate Ashley Harris was victorious in her first match in the singles draw D1 flight, knocking off Catherine Lynas from UNC Charlotte, 6-1, 6-1, before bowing out in the next round, 6-4, 6-2.

Western's Susanna Sjokvist dropped her opening match in the singles draw D2 flight, but rallied to pick up victories over Kim Kennedy from Charleston Southern and Amber McGolerick in the consolation bracket before losing in the finals, 7-6, 7-5.

In doubles action, the tandem of Ptak and Hanson dropped their opener 8-5 and fell in the consolation match, 8-6. Likewise, the team of Ikard and Harris, who were seeded second in the doubles draw B3, fell in their first bout but rallied to win the consoliation bracket defeating the duo of Morgan Martin/Lindsay Boyken from UNC Asheville.

 

 

The women's tennis team returns to action on Thursday, October 21 as they travel to the ITA Southeast Regionals. The five-day event is being held in Winston-Salem, N.C.
