Raleigh, N.C. - Western Carolina freshman tennis player Tessie Salame, who was not expected to compete two days out from the event, claimed an individual singles championship and teamed with senior Trish Hanson to win the consolation bracket in doubles play at the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational, hosted by NC State over the weekend.

Salame did not play in the first round of the D2 singles, but was inserted into the lineup when the victorious Kelly Tolmann of High Point injured herself at the end of her opening round match. Salame proceeded to go unbeaten in two matches to win the bracket, defeating Annie Day of James Madison (6-0, 6-3) and Whitney Flescher of Samford (6-4, 6-3).

The Ecuadorian rookie teamed with Hanson in the A2 Doubles flight in bracket play. After dropping their opening match, the team of Hanson/Salame won three-straight in the consolation bracket to win that half.

In other singles action, Hanson dropped her opening bout of the invitational before rallying to advance to the consolation bracket championship against Laura Kriett of Gardner-Webb. Kriett went up early with a 6-2 victory before Hanson tied the match at one apiece with a 7-5 victory. Kriett finished off the match with a 6-1 win in the third set.

Juniors Susanna Sjokvist and Mariona Trilla Jane had a tough go in singles competition, placing seventh and eighth, respectively, in the consolation bracket play at C1 and C3 singles. Freshman Amanda Massey dropped her first two bouts before winning her third to place seventh in the C4 singles, while her classmate, Teresa Stevens, placed eighth at D1.

In doubles action, the team of Stocks/Trilla Jane finished seventh in the consolation bracket while Massey/Sjokvist won their opening match before being dropping two to finish seventh on the right side of bracket play.

The Catamount women's tennis team returns to action on October 13-15 when it visits the Southeast Tennis Regional to be held in Chapel Hill, N.C.
