Johnson City, Tenn. - Western Carolina's Kristin Ikard and Ashley Harris each won their respectively singles brackets at this weekend's ETSU Fall Tennis Tournament. Ikard and Harris had success as a doubles team as well, reaching the final of "B" bracket.

Ikard, playing in the singles "D" bracket, reached the final by defeating Whitney Stround of Mars Hill (6-3, 6-0) and Jobria McCracken of Tusculum (6-1, 6-1). In the championship, the senior from Clemson, S.C., cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jewel Aldea of East Tennessee State. Harris, a freshman from Belmont, N.C., was playing in the singles "F" bracket and reached the final by only dropping a total of just four games thanks to 6-1, 6-1 decisions over Bronwyn Jartley (Tusculum) and Kasey Campbell (Milligan). In the championship Harris shutout Tusculum's Linsey Kurtz, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Ikard and Harris defeated KrissiDenton and Amber Campbell of Milligan, 8-1, then beat Tusculum's team of Gabriela Mora and Lindsey Kurtz by the same 8-1 score. However, in the final, ETSU's Aldea and Gemma Halim won by a score of 8-3.

In other singles action, freshman Trish Hanson (Alpharetta, Ga.) suffered a tough first-round loss to ETSU's Mariia Ilina, 7-5, 6-1 in the singles "B" bracket. However Hanson rallied to defeat Milligan's Cassie Lomison 6-1, 7-6 and Virginia Intermont's Vita Feldman in three sets 6-2, 4-6 and 11-9 in a tie-breaker. In the singles "A" bracket, freshman Katherine Ptak dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to ETSU's Sandie Knight and lost to Appalachian State's Lindsey Free 6-4, 6-1 in the consolation championship. Susanna Sjokvist (Gustafs, Sweden) reached the championship of the "E" singles bracket. The freshman first defeated Virginia Intermont's Anna Bloome 6-2, 6-2, then handed Leanna Shutt of App State a 7-5, 6-1 loss. In the championship, Sjokvist fell 6-4, 6-2 to App State's Meg Dlugos.

 

 

In doubles action, Western's Hanson and Ptak lost in the first round of the "A" bracket, 8-2, to Sandie Knight and Elena Volobueva of ETSU. The Catamount duo then beat Virginia Intermont's Ester Mbugua and Janetta Khaemba, 8-4, before losing to Tusculum's Claudia Bolivar and Maria Nevarez, 8-6, in the consolation championship.

The WCU tennis team returns to action Oct. 15-17 at the N.C. State Fall Invitational.
