Day One Done for WCU Women's Tennis at Wolfpack Invitational

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team completed the first day of competition at the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational Friday with one doubles victory and a singles player landing in the consolation championship. The team of sophomore Trish Hanson and senior Katherine Ptak advanced in their doubles flight, while freshman April Greene advanced to the finals in the consolation bracket in singles.

Hanson/Ptak defeated Kristin Nordstrom and Mary Napier from James Madison, 8-6, first thing Friday morning to move on in the A-2 doubles flight. The Western duo will face Ashleigh Murray and Michelle Alexander from Charlotte at 8:00 am on Saturday morning at the Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh. The winner will move on to play at 10:30 am.

In other doubles action, sophomore Susanna Sjokvist and freshman Holly Stocks fell, 8-2, to Nicole Lemmerer and Rosemary Younger from Coastal Carolina. The Catamount tandem received a bye in the second round of the consolation bracket and will face the team of Phillips and Day from James Madison for the right to move into the left side championship match.

Freshman April Greene will play for the consolation championship at 9:45 am on Saturday morning in the D-flight singles bracket. Greene fell to Logan Beam of East Carolina before receiving byes that landed her in the championship match. Greene will face A. Day from JMU.

In other action, Hanson fell to second-seeded Agustina Arechavaleta from N.C. State, 6-2, 6-3 to move into the consolation bracket. The sophomore will face Ann-Charlott Talus from High Point University at 3:30 pm Saturday afternoon. Both playing in the C2 singles bracket, Sjokvist and Ptak both fell in their respective matches. Sjokvist battled hard, forcing a third set before falling 6-3, 6-7(4) 7-6 (1). She will face T. Ahuja of Campbell at 11:45 am on Saturday on the courts at Meredith College. Ptak, who was seeded second in the bracket, fell to Michelle Alexander of Charlotte, 6-2-6-0. The senior from Ontario, Canada will battle K. Rakes of Wofford at 1:00 pm, also at the Meredith College courts.



Holly Stocks, who was seeded third in her D-flight singles, will have a chance for a top eight finish as she fell in her opening round match, but by virtue of seeding, will face East Carolina's Zandy Overcash Sunday at 11:45 am in the bracket to determine fifth through eighth.
