Final Brackets from ETSU Fall Invitational

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team opened up play in their 2005-06 season at the East Tennessee State Fall Tennis Invitational last weekend in Johnson City, Tenn. The non-team scored event included both singles and doubles competitions between a total of 10 schools.

In doubles competition, the team of sophomore Susanna Sjokvist and freshman Holly Stocks advanced in the women's "C" bracket, defeating the Carson-Newman duo of Cassie Moulton and Jennifer Jones, 8-1. After falling in the second round match-up to the team from Tusculum College, the tandem Sjokvist and Stocks won in the consolation bracket, defeating Maranda Dellinger and Kim Blythe from Mars Hill, 9-7, to place third in the bracket.

In other doubles action, the pairing of sophomore Trish Hanson and senior Katherine Ptak dropped their opening match in the "A" bracket, but rallied to earn an 8-4 victory over Erika Bellettini and Tessa Caprio from Carson Newman before bowing out to the team from Radford.

In singles play, Western failed to win an opening round bout, but did rally to fair well in the consolation brackets. Sjokvist dropped her opening service to Vita Moskaliova from the homestanding East Tennessee State Bucs squad, but rallied to defeat Chiromo from Cumberland University (6-0, 6-1), and Dellinger from Mars Hill (6-1, 7-5) to win the consolation bracket.

Likewise, Hanson, Greene, and Ptak all dropped their first set in their respective draws before winning in the left side of the bracket.

The Catamount tennis team returns to action this weekend, traveling to Raleigh for the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational, hosted by North Carolina State University. A total of 18 teams are scheduled to compete this weekend: Armstrong Atlantic State, Auburn, Campbell, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Elon, Georgia, Hampton, High Point, James Madison, Liberty, NC State, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina, Winthrop and Wofford.
