Johnson City, Tenn. - Every Catamount scored at least one victory in both singles and doubles competition, with the doubles team of Trish Hanson and Maria Tessie Salame winning their bracket at the season-opening East Tennessee State Fall Invitational last Friday and Saturday.
Hanson and Tessie Salame won three matches to take the A1 doubles bracket title in their first competition playing as a team. Hanson, a third-year number one player from Alpharetta, Ga., and the freshman Tessie Salame could see time this spring as the first flight doubles combo.
In other doubles action, juniors Susanna Sjokvist and Mariona Trilla Jane dropped their opener but rallied for a second-place finish in the consolation A2 doubles bracket. Sophomore Holly Stocks and freshman Amanda Massey placed fourth in the C doubles bracket for Western.
In singles, Tessie Salame placed third in the gold bracket in her first collegiate competition, while her doubles partner, Hanson, finished third in the consolation portion of the same bracket. After dropping her opening match in the brown bracket, Massey rallied to win the consolation bracket championship with back-to-back victories.
Stocks and Stevens posted third place finishes in their respective brackets (green and black), while Trilla Jane was third in the consolation portion of her bracket play. Sjokvist posted a fourth-place showing in the blue bracket for the Catamounts.
Western continues its fall schedule visiting the North Carolina State Fall Tournament in Raleigh, N.C., on Thursday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 1.
