Johnson City, Tenn. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team is in Johnson City this weekend to compete in the East Tennessee State Fall Invitational. After the first day of competition, senior Kristin Munn, junior Kristin Cotton and sophomore Katie VanEwyk are still undefeated in their respective brackets as they each won their first match of the tournament.

Munn faced Andreea Cotuna of Liberty in the first round and took the match in straight sets, 7-6(3), 7-6(2). Cotton defeated Esther Mbugua of Virginia Intermont in straight sets as well; 6-3, 6-1. VanEwyk gave up just four games herself as she rolled past Felicia Ruiz of Virginia Intermont, 6-1, 6-3.

Senior Shannon Zalinski fought hard, but lost her first match, 4-6, 7-5, 3-6, to Cassie Lomison from Milligan. Wrapping up singles action, senior Erin Johnson fell to Mariya Ilyina of ETSU, 2-6, 2-6. Both Zalinski and Johnson will move on in the consolation bracket Saturday.

In doubles action, Munn and Johnson (B bracket) steamrolled McFarland and Dellinger of Mar Hill, 8-0, but lost, 8-2, to Lomison and Lomison of Milligan in the second match. In the C bracket, Cotton and VanEwyk took two consecutive matches, defeating Mora and McCrackin of Tuculum, 8-2, then Muna and Stephens also of TC, 8-2. Without a sixth person, Zalinski paired up with Virginia Intermont's Hall, falling to Conn and Wallingford of Milligan, 9-8(8-6). In the consolation match, the duo dropped to Campbell and Vincent, also of Milligan, 8-4.

Action continues Saturday on the campus of East Tennessee State with the tournament wrapping up on Sunday.
