ELON, N.C. -
The Western Carolina tennis team fought through rain delays and adverse conditions to pick up a doubles win and a singles win in the consolation finals of the Elon Fall Invitational Sunday afternoon.
In the finals of the B-2 Doubles Flight, Karen Jiménez and Erin Maguire faced a mixed doubles group of Baker (Elon) and Van de Berg (USC Upstate) in a match that was schedule to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday morning. Once play began, it was all Western Carolina with the Catamount duo winning the match and the flight with its 8-3 win.
Also in doubles, the WCU team of Sara Ruiz and Stacia Kissell fell to Virginia Tech's Lauten and Martinez- Marcos, 3-8, in the consolation final of the A-1 Doubles Flight.
In singles play, the Catamounts had three freshmen in the consolation finals of the singles flights. Teammates Nicole Nielly and Shannon Bettiol were scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. in the B-1 Singles Flight consolation finals. Due to the rain, the match will be played on the WCU campus this week. Stacia Kissell did play her match and went up against conference-rival Stephanie Falcon of UNCG and lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
"I think it's great our junior returner Karen Jiménez and freshman Erin Maguire to win their main draw for their B-2 flight," said head coach Chris Wollett.
"I think it's great taking six freshmen and each going to the finals in one way or another. We learned a lot about the fight in our players.Considering how young our team is this year, I'm very impressed with the results over the weekend."
The Catamounts next play in the ITA Carolina Regional beginning on October 18. The event in Wake Forest, N.C., will last five days.
