The duo of Jiménez and Maguire move into the finals of the B-2 Doubles Flight for their win in the second day of the Elon Fall Invitational Saturday in Elon, N.C.
Jiménez and Maguire - after winning Friday in their first match, 8-1 - defeated North Carolina Central's Muamba and Aguilar, 8-4, to reach the finals against the mixed group of Baker (Elon) and Van de Berg (USC Upstate). The matchup is set for 9 a.m. on Sunday.
In singles play, Jiménez - who won her opening round match - fell to Elon's Maria Camara, 6-3, 6-1. Maguire, her doubles partner who also won her first match, won her first match Saturday with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over conference foe Alisha Burton of UNCG. In her second match, Maguire fell to N.C. Central's Aissa Mumba, 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman Stacia Kissell picked up her first two collegiate victories with her opening match win over N.C. Central's Olesya Palko. Kissell won 6-1, 6-1. In the second match of the day, Kissell faced Virginia Tech's Emily Lauten. Kissell won 6-4, 6-0. She will play conference rival Stephanie Falcon of UNCG Sunday at 10 a.m. for the consolation bracket championship in the A-1 Singles Flight.
Nicole Nielly fared similarly to her classmate Kissell as the freshman cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory of North Carolina A&T's Nianna Henry. Then, defeated NC A&T's Victoria Austin by default, advancing to Sunday's 9 a.m. final against teammate Shannon Bettiol. Bettiol advanced through the consolation bracket by defeating N.C. A&T's Unique Hawkins (6-1, 6-0) and then downing Virginia Tech's Marshal Temory (6-1, 6-2).
Freshman Sara Ruiz fell to N.C. A&T's Cayla Cross in a tough, three-set match, falling 7-5, 1-6, 5-10.
In more doubles action, the Catamount group of Ruiz and Kissell will play Virginia Tech' Lauten and Martinez-Marcos after defeating North Carolina A&T's Cross and Henry, 8-1. They will play at 9 a.m. Sunday.
