Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina's women's tennis team began their fall schedule on the road today at the North Carolina State Women's Tennis Fall Invitational. Two of the six team members advanced to the second round of singles play, while the number three doubles team of Kristin Munn and Kristin Cotton moved on after winning their first match, 8-4.
Munn fell to Winthrop's J. Andrade (6-0, 6-3) in the first round of singles play in the Flight A1 bracket. In Flight A2, Megan Bechtold dropped her match to UNC Charlotte's A. Murray (6-1, 6-2) and Shannon Zalinski was defeated by NC State's L. Worsley (6-0, 6-0). Flight B2 Erin Johnson lost to East Carolina's E. Kohl (6-2, 6-2). WCU's number five player Katie Van Ewyk defeated fourth seeded player C. Rainbow from Davidson (6-3, 6-3) and Kristin Cotton beat UNC Wilmington's L. Fillietraz (6-4, 2-6, 6-1), both in Flight C. Van Ewyk will face K. Mears from Wilmington Saturday at 10 am while Cotton faces third seeded J. Wisnoski of Stetson at 10.
In Flight A doubles action, Zalinski and Bechtold lost to ECU's Baicu/Buchannon, 8-0. Johnson and Van Ewyk fell to ECU's number one seeded Jordan/Sierpinski, 8-0, in Flight B1. In Flight B2, Munn and Cotton defeated ECU's Meilieke/Kohl, 8-4, to advance to the second round to face number three seeded Staddelmann/Torres of NC State. Round two was originally scheduled for Saturday, but due to weather concerns, the teams squared off Friday at 5:15. Munn and Cotton lost a hard fought match to the Wolfpack duo, 8-6.
"For Katie to beat a Southern Conference opponent in her first collegiate match was a great win for her," said head coach Jan Stubbs. "Kristin Cotton played a great singles match as well. Our number three doubles team (Munn/Cotton) showed excellent poise in their matches today. In the first one, they played well enough to win and in the second, they stepped it up a notch. They were actually winning that match, but just couldn?t close it."
