DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central (11-12) defeated the Western Carolina tennis team 6-1 in the regular season finale Sunday in Durham, N.C. at the NCCU Tennis Courts. The lone point for the Catamounts came from sophomore Karen Jiménez at the No. 4 singles slot.
Jiménez finished her regular season in a strong way, picking up two wins on Sunday afternoon. In No. 2 doubles, Jiménez teamed up with senior Izabella Glinska - who yesterday played in her final home match at Western Carolina - came away with an 8-3 victory over NCCU's Lombard and Nedstrom. In her No. 4 singles match, Jiménez cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kelly Chaparro.
In singles action, Cameron Chatman squeaked by Carolina Lainez in the first set of the No. 2 singles match, winning 7-6. After fighting back and forth for the beginning of the second set, Chatman was finally able to break serve to guide her to a 6-3 win in the second set, giving her the victory at No. 2.
Fredrica Lombard picked up the point for N.C. Central at the No. 3 spot due to an injury to Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz. The Eagles picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 5, winning 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-0.
Western Carolina will travel to the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. for the 2011 SoCon Women's Tennis Championships, beginning Wednesday morning. Tournament information can be found throughout the week on SoConSports.com as well as CatamountSports.com.
