CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
Western Carolina honored seniors Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz and Katie Barry, Saturday, as the Catamounts faced the Wofford Terriers at the Catamount Athletic Complex. Wofford topped the Catamounts 6-1 with Iglesias Díaz picking up the lone win for the Purple and Gold.
In doubles play, Wofford won both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with 8-4 wins with Sarah Evans and Guinn Garcia defeating Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz and Megan McLinden with Emily Przystawski and Julia Paulson downing Karen Jiménez and Katie Barry.
In singles play, Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz won the first set against Wofford’s Sarah Evans, 7-5. Iglesias Díaz fell in the second, 2-6, before rebounding to take the third set tie-break, 10-5. Freshman Megan McLinden also had a hard-fought match with Julia Paulson in No. 2 singles. Paulson won a close first set, 6-4. In the second set, McLinden and Paulson were all knotted at 6, leading to a tiebreak which Paulson won, 7-4.
“Ainhoa [Iglesias Díaz] and Megan [McLinden] fought hard at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Ainhoa pulled out a great, third set win on Senior Day,” said head coach Chris Wollett. “Megan showed a lot of heart at No. 2 with highs and lows, but eventually fell. We played some good doubles at the beginning and end of the matches, but we slipped enough for them to take the wins.”
Western Carolina plays its final regular season match of the season – and the last of three straight home matches – against UNC Greensboro Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
