Cullowhee, N.C. -
Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms across Western North Carolina has forced the cancellation of the Western Carolina-UNC Charlotte women's tennis match. Due to schedule restraints, the match will not be rescheduled.
Anticipating late afternoon showers, the schools' coaches agreed on Tuesday to move the match start time up one hour. During pre-game warm-ups, however, a streak of lightning lit the gray skies, forcing the teams to vacate the courts in keeping with safety policies. Midway through the mandatory 30 minute wait period, the clouds opened up with a light sprinkle. The light rainfall then turned into a steadier downpour, prompting the coaches to cancel the non-conference tilt.
This marks the second time in the past four years that a WCU-UNCC women's tennis match has been called due to weather. In 2002, the Catamounts and 49ers were unable to take the courts due to foul conditions.
Western Carolina will visit Appalachian State this Saturday, April 16 for a match that was moved due to snowy conditions in Boone back on April 3. The regular-season finale between the Catamounts and Mountaineers is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
