Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team fell to Wofford 7-0 in Southern Conference play Saturday afternoon.
In singles action freshman Kristin Munn battled with Wofford's Wendy Rohr in a 6-3, 6-3 loss at No. 1. Junior Shelby Fitzpatrick took almost all points to deuce, however, fell to Lauren M. Whisenhunt by a score of 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2. Freshman Erin Johnson fell to Anna Martin at the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4 freshman Shannon Zalinski fell to Candy Gore, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Emmy King fell 6-3 in the first set to Kristine Banks. She came back in the second but could not get the win. King fell 6-5 in the second at No. 5. Junior Amy Rex fell to Mary Wallace DeBerry 8-0 in a pro set at No. 6.
In doubles play Fitzpatrick and Zalinski battled to a 9-8 loss. They fell to Whisenhunt and Martin 8-6 in the tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot. King and Munn fell to Gore and Rohr 8-4 at No. 2 while Munn and Rex fell to Banks and DeBerry 8-2 at No. 3.
The Lady Cats fall to 4-12 overall and 0-9 in Southern Conference competition. The Lady Terriers improve to 10-7 and 2-5 in league play.
Western Carolina travels to The Citadel April 19-21 for the Southern Conference tournament.
