CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
Western Carolina's women's tennis (1-13, 0-7 SoCon) fell to Chattanooga (13-4, 5-3 SoCon), 0-7, Friday at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The match was delayed an hour due to the courts being wet from rain that hit the Cullowhee area overnight.
Chattanooga set the tone early for the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. After getting ahead early in No. 2 doubles 2-1, Karen Jiménez and Katie Barry fell to Emily Hangstefer and Brianna Wishing, 8-3. WCU's No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams fell 8-2 and 8-0, respectively.
In singles, Karen Jiménez dropped a close, 7-5 first set to Chattanooga's Shaina Singh. Singh won the second set 6-2. Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz fell 6-4, 6-4 in No. 1 singles. Megan McLinden split sets with UTC's Kaylene Chadwell, 6-3, 1-6, before McLinden retired from the match.
Katie Barry lost at No. 4 singles to Claire Mulyadi, 6-1, 6-1. Sarah Walters and Taylor Casey fell at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, 6-0, 6-0.
Western Carolina returns to action next Friday in a conference make-up match against Furman on April 13 at home in Cullowhee at 3:00 p.m. The match was originally postponed due to rain.
