Cullowhee, N.C. - What looked to be a promising day for Western Carolina Tennis was darkened by clouds as today's match against Charlotte was cancelled due to rain.
"Being a really close match, it was unfortunate the weather made us cancel play," said head Coach Chris Wollett. "The girls were competing well and I hope we can bring the same intensity into our next match."
The Catamounts split in doubles play as freshmen Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol picked up an aggressive win against Charlotte's Lisa Grosselius and Natsuko Takayanagi, winning 8-4 in the No. 1 match. The 49ers were victorious in the No. 2 match as Tyler Baker and Emmanuelle Briant defeated WCU's Nicole Nielly and Sara Ruiz Pajares, 2-8.
In singles action, Kissell grabbed a first-set win before play was interrupted by rain. Kissell led Charlotte's Alexandra Zinn 6-1 in the first set and was tied 1-1 in the second.
WCU (1-10, 0-5 SoCon) will move on to host conference challenger Davidson (7-6, 0-4 SoCon) on Saturday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
