Catamounts Come Up Short Against 49ers

With her win Saturday, Erin Maguire has four singles wins on the season.

Charlotte, N.C. - Stacia Kissell, Erin Maguire and Nicole Nielly all earned singles victories, but the Western Carolina women's tennis team fell, 4-3, at Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.

At the doubles competition, WCU's No. 3 pairing of Sara Ruiz Pajares and Maguire came up short to Lisa Grosselius and Briana Bodner, 8-4. The 49ers clinched the doubles point with a victory at the No. 2 doubles match as Jessica Perez and Macy Vonderschmidt defeated the Catamounts Megan McLinden and Nielly, 8-7(6).

The No. 1 doubles match was stopped at 7-6 (40-0) as the Catamounts' Kissell and Shannon Bettiol were facing Victoria Pahlett and Natsuko Takayanagi of Charlotte.

In singles action, at the No. 2 position, Bettiol dropped her contest to Grosselius in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Kissell pushed her winning streak to 10 straight in singles competition, defeating Pahlett in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match.

Charlotte's Vanderschmidt defeated WCU's Ruiz in straight sets at the No. 4 singles match, 6-2, 6-2, Maguire found victory for the Catamounts, defeating Bodner in the No. 6 singles contest, 6-1, 6-2.

Charlotte clinched the match with a win at the No. 3 singles contest as Takayamagi defeated McLinden 6-1, 6-2.

In the final match of the day, Western Carolina's Nicole Nielly gained her first victory on the season, defeating Perez, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.



Western Carolina hits the courts again on Tuesday, March 25, as they play host to Furman at 2 p.m.
