Final Stats

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina's women's tennis team was nipped by Wofford 4-3 Thursday at Reeves Tennis Center.

The Terriers Adriane Hodges defeated Western Carolina's Tessie Salame 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot to secure the victory for Wofford. The win came as Wofford led 3-2 with two matches left to play. Wofford led off with a doubles win at the No. 2 spot, as Hodges and Cayley Wetzig defeated the Catamount pairing of Suzanna Sjokvist and Mariona Jane 8-2. After dropping the first two games to fall behind 2-0, Hodges and Wetzig rallied to win the next eight to complete their fourth doubles win of the season.

Western Carolina would take the doubles point, however, after a win at No. 1, as Trish Hanson and Tessie Salome defeated Merry Ellen Henry and McKenzie Carson. Wofford had to forfeit at No. 3.

Following the doubles matches, Wofford fell behind 2-0 after a forfeit at the No. 6 singles position. Henry notched Wofford's first point with a 6-0, 6-2 singles win over Hanson at the No. 1 spot. Sabrina Smyers followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Mariona Jane to even the score at 2-2. Wofford took the lead minutes later as Wetzig, Wofford's sophomore No. 3 player, triumphed over Suzanna Sjokvist for a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Western Carolina drops to 4-7 on the season and 0-3 in Southern Conference play. The Wofford women's team improves to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Catamounts returns to action on Saturday, hosting UNC-Greensboro at 1 p.m.
